The city is served by the Corner Brook Airport. In 1615, an English vessel did some fishing at "Terra Nova" (Newfoundland). In his 1616 report, Samuel Argall reported that he had met with the "King of Terra Nova", who was a subject of the Spanish Crown. The Mi'kmaq name for Newfoundland was "Kespek". It may be that Captain James Cook's so-called naming of Newfoundland in 1767 and Cape Breton Island as "New Ireland" were both partly influenced by this earlier naming given by John Cabot in 1497 to what became known as Newfoundland or Terra Nova. During French colonization between 1662 and 1713, several outports on the western coast were established under ducal charter granted to French noble families: LaHave (1662), Bay du Nord (1700) and St.-Jean de Terre Neuve ("St.-John's New Land")(1713).
