The falls were named after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), who was a general and statesman in the British Army. Churchill Falls is located on the Churchill River in Labrador, Canada. It is one of the largest waterfalls by volume flow rate in North America with an average annual rate of 585 cubic meters per second (18,000 cu ft/s). The total drop from crest to river level is 245 m (804 ft) over a distance of 2 km (1 mi).
