The town was named after the Tracadie River, which in turn is derived from the Mi'kmaq word "takadik" meaning "where there are trout". The river's name has also been spelled as Traquedi. Tracadie-Sheila had a population of 1,942 in 2011. It is located on Route 134 about east of Bathurst and west of Miramichi at 45°05′N 66°22′W / 45.083°N 66.
