The county was established in 1786: it is named for the Duke of Northumberland, who served as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1746 to 1814. The county borders Westmorland County and Kent County in New Brunswick; and Lamèque, Gloucester Counties on Chaleur Bay. It also shares a small border with Quebec across Lake Témiscouata at Rivière-à-Pierre (Rivière aux Pierres).
