Grand Falls is located on the Saint John River, approximately halfway between Fredericton and Moncton. It is situated at the mouth of a gorge cut through by this river in its course from Grand Lake to the Bay of Fundy. The town was founded in 1883 as a lumbering centre and has since become an important industrial community with pulp mills, sawmills, paperboard factories and other wood processing plants being major employers. A pulp mill owned by Kruger Inc., which employs about 500 people (2006), operates here under the name Kruger Cellulose Grand Falls Ltd.[2] The town's economy also benefits from tourism due to its location near several tourist attractions including Hopewell Rocks,[3] Kouchibouguac National Park,[4] Fundy National Park[5], Cape Enrage Lighthouse[6], Cape Jourimain Nature Preserve[7], Magnetic Hill Zoo [8][9][10].
