Grand Falls is located on the Saint John River, approximately halfway between Fredericton and Moncton. It is situated at the mouth of a gorge cut through by this river in its course from Grand Lake to the Bay of Fundy. The town was founded in 1883 as a lumbering centre and has since become an important industrial community with pulp mills, sawmills, paperboard factories and other wood processing plants being major employers. A pulp mill owned by Kruger Inc., which employs about 500 people (2006), operates here under the name Kruger Cellulose Grand Falls Ltd. The town's economy also benefits from tourism due to its location near several tourist attractions including Hopewell Rocks, Kouchibouguac National Park, Fundy National Park, Cape Enrage Lighthouse, Cape Jourimain Nature Preserve, Magnetic Hill Zoo .
