The city was founded by Loyalists who fled to British territory following the American Revolution; it was named for Edmund Burke, a member of Britain's House of Commons who had strongly supported colonial America during its struggle for independence from Great Britain. The population has been relatively stable since 1980: Census data show an increase from 12,879 residents in 2011 to 13,049 residents at 2016 census (+1%). According to Statistics Canada's latest estimate (2016), there were 13 049 people living within Edmundston's boundaries .
