About Dieppe

Dieppe is located on the Petitcodiac River, which flows into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence. The river was once an important transportation route for loggers and fishermen. Today it is a popular tourist attraction with its scenic views and history of shipbuilding. The Dieppe Raid in World War II took place at nearby "Portsmouth" (now called Shearwater) in 1942, but there are no memorials or monuments to this event within the city limits; however there are several war cemeteries around Dieppe that contain many Canadian soldiers who died during these battles such as those at Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial , Bény-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery , Bretteville -sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery , Banneville - sur - Aa German Military cemetery .
