The Sunshine Coast is the location of several communities, including Sechelt, Gibsons and Powell River. The term "Sunshine Coast" also refers to the area's geography and climate: it has a milder climate than Vancouver or Victoria because it lies further from the moderating influence of Pacific Ocean. The Sunshine Coast was inhabited by indigenous peoples for thousands of years before European settlement in 1859. In 1792 Captain George Vancouver explored Howe Sound at what is now called Point Grey near UBC on his ship HMS Discovery; he named nearby mountains after British admirals (including Howe) who served with him in wars against France during that century.
