The Pitt River flows northwards through the city towards the Fraser. The municipality's eastern boundary is formed by a portion of that river, and most of its southern boundary with Burnaby is formed by another portion known as Burke Creek. To the west are unincorporated areas of Greater Vancouver, including Buntzen Lake Provincial Park and a small area around Morgan Creek where it borders Langley. Portions of Maple Ridge were originally incorporated as South Westminster in 1874; however this was merged into New Westminster along with Point Grey in 1886 to form what would eventually become Metro Vancouver (though not yet called such). In 1968, residents chose to secede from New Westminster and incorporated as "Maple Ridge".
