The town was incorporated in 1966. Invermere is located at the confluence of Windermere Lake and the Columbia River, where they form Windermere Channel. The channel leads to Kootenay Lake, which flows into the province of Alberta and then on to Lethbridge before reaching its terminus at Fort Macleod. The Rocky Mountains rise steeply from both shores of this narrow stretch of water; Mount Temple rises above Invermere's harbour area while Mount Assiniboine towers over it from across the lake in Banff National Park (Alberta). The surrounding region has a subarctic climate with long cold winters but short warm summers that are moderated by proximity to large bodies of water such as lakes or oceans like nearby Kootenay Lake and Flathead Lake (U.S.).
