About Lethbridge

Before the 19th century, the Lethbridge area was populated by several First Nations at various times. The Blackfoot referred to the area as "Aksaysim", "the winding water". The Sarcee referred to it as "" in their language. French traders called it "" ("flat rock"). In 1859, American settlers named it after Lethbridge, England; a town near Cambridge where some of the first North American coal mines were established. The Cree name for Lethbridge is , which refers to a specific point on an island in Oldman River used by First Nations people and early fur traders from Fort Benton (Montana) who came upriver with furs and hides bound for Fort Whoop-Up (also known as Fort Kipp). This term became common when discussing locations during the Riel Rebellion of 1885: many white men had been killed there by Cree warriors led by Wandering Spirit's band while fleeing from Battleford towards Macleod along what is now Highway #3 through Milk River valley.
