The main objectives of the Foundation are promoting the development of cultural, educational and tourist potential in Plovdiv. Plovdiv: Name The name Plovdiv is derived from the Old Bulgarian "Pловдивъ", originally a compound of "pló" (meaning "more") and *"bǫrěti"; thus it means something like "(the) more (good) city". The name was sometimes Latinized as Florentia, which remains a secondary name for the city in some Western European languages. The city was known as Philippopolis () by western medieval chroniclers; this name is still used today in Greek which also appears in numerous variants such as Filibe or Filippoupoli ("Φιλιππουπόλει").
