The region was originally inhabited by the Tupi people. The first European to settle in the area was João Leite da Silva Moura, a Portuguese nobleman, in 1603. He established a settlement called "Vila Nova" on top of an ancient Jesuit mission named "Santana", which had been abandoned since 1580 because of Indian attacks and disease. The colonial administration was moved to Vila Rica (now Ouro Preto) when it was founded in 1711, but Belo Horizonte itself dates from as late as 1808 (when it became known as Nossa Senhora do Pilar de Belo Horizonte).
