Campo Grande is the birthplace of Brazilian football. The city's main team, Coritiba Futebol Clube, was one of Brazil's most important clubs in the first decades of football history and won several national championships. In 1979, it became the first club outside São Paulo state to win a national championship (the Taça Brasil). Campo Grande is also home to Esporte Clube Comercial (ECC), founded in 1914 by German immigrants as "Sport Club Germânia", which has been one of Brazil's top 20 clubs for many years and won five Paraná state league titles since 2000.
