The original Latin name of the city was "Aquae Gratianae" ("the Waters of Emperor Gratian"). The spa is referred to as "Spa" in English, but this should not be confused with the Belgian town called Spa. In 1758, John Stuart, Earl of Bute sent Henry Seymour Conway to discover mineral springs near Liège. This discovery led to the development and growth of what is now known as Spawhere it all began for many centuries ago! In 1816 two small towns merged becoming one: Eupen (German) and Malmédy (French). They chose a Prussian named Baron von Hügel as their ruler; he turned out to be a tyrant causing much discord in these towns that were so close together yet had different languages.
