Nivelles is home to the InBev brewery and has the head office of Crelan, a major insurance company. The Nivelles train station is served by regular TEC Charleroi-Liège trains, with direct connections to Brussels South (15 minutes) and Namur (10 minutes). The first written mention of Nivelles dates from 567 under the name "Niuelin". During this period it was a small village that provided food for local inhabitants. This changed in 881 when Louis III, Count of Hainaut established fortifications against incursions from Lothair II's kingdom into his own lands.
