At the time of the Roman conquest, the region of Bastogne was inhabited by a Celtic tribe known to Romans as the Treveri. A form of their name, "Treverorum", gave its name to Trier in Germany and from which comes the English word "tribe". The municipality's oldest settlement is Baudour (Bodurum), located on a hill overlooking Bastogne. The town itself is situated on an important crossroads between Luxembourg City to its south-west and Liège to its north-east, where it borders with Belgium's Walloon province of Namur.
