About Temse

The town of Temse is located in the northwest of East Flanders, on the left bank of the Scheldt. It borders with Oudenaarde and Aalst in Flemish Brabant, as well as with Beveren-aan-den-Ijzer (subdivision) and Kruishoutem (subdivisions) within its own province. The municipality comprises several towns: Elversele, Steendorp or Temse proper ("Temse Stad"), Tielrode ("Tielt") and Woubrechtegem ("Woubrugge"). The population centres are scattered over a large area along the river Scheldt; they have grown together only recently due to urbanisation. This has created problems such as traffic congestion at rush hour because there is no central core where most people work or shop for daily needs.
