The name Ternat is derived from the Celtic word for 'summit'. The village was first mentioned in a document dating from 1046. In 1295, the castle and lordship of Ternat were purchased by John I, Duke of Brabant. It remained with the Duchy until 1794 when it became part of France during French Revolutionary Wars. After 1815 it became part of Belgium following its independence from the Netherlands under King William I (1772–1843).
