About Heist-op-den-Berg

On January 1, 2006 Heist-op-den-Berg had a total population of 19,843. The total area is 53.35 km² which gives a population density of 370 inhabitants per km². The municipality consists mainly out of the towns and hamlets that were already there in the Middle Ages: Heist (or Heist), Booischot, Hallaar and Schriek (which was part of Itegem until 1846). In 1856 Wiekevorst became an independent village as well; it used to be part of Booischot before then.[1] On July 5th 1970 Zonderschot merged with Heist,[2] but on January 1st 1977 it split up again into two separate municipalities.
