The city hall (Stadhuis) has a 15th-century tower, and the church of Sint-Maria is from the same period. The name Zottegem comes from "Zot" or "Sottes", which are diminutive forms of God's name in Dutch dialects. The first mention dates back to 1046 as 'Zuthem'. In 1212 it was mentioned as 'Sothegem' and later on several occasions with various spellings such as: Zotteghem (1268), Sottengemme (1317), Soetegheme(m)(1402) etc.. The current spelling appeared for the first time in 1436.
