The official language is Dutch, as everywhere in Flanders. Local minorities consist of French-speakers (Walloons), and German-speakers. The town is part of the arrondissement of Ghent, which is situated to its north and west borders with France. Eeklo was a municipality until 1977 when it became a part of Oudenaarde but regained its independence on January 1, 1983 after the merger with Kieldrecht failed because too few people were interested in joining Eeklo.
