Eeklo (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈeːkloː] (listen)) is a Belgian municipality in the Flemish province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises only the town of Eeklo proper. The name Eeklo comes from the contraction of "eke" and "lo", two Old German words meaning oak and sparse woods (compare English Oakley).


The official language is Dutch, as everywhere in Flanders. Local minorities consist of French-speakers (Walloons), and German-speakers. The town is part of the arrondissement of Ghent, which is situated to its north and west borders with France.
Eeklo was a municipality until 1977 when it became a part of Oudenaarde but regained its independence on January 1, 1983 after the merger with Kieldrecht failed because too few people were interested in joining Eeklo.
