The current mayor of Diest is Christoph D'Haese, from the CD&V party. The municipality includes a portion of the Campine region and extends to the north and east to include portions of Hageland including its highest point, at Vaalserberg (Dutch: Vaalserbrugge) which rises above sea level. The town lies on top of an important transport junction between northern Europe and southern Europe via Brussels-Charleroi Canal/River Scheldt basin with connections towards Ghent in Flanders or Tongeren in Wallonia. It also has connections towards Liège via Albert Canal leading through Maastricht into Germany's Ruhr area as well as Aachen by way of Meuse valley following River Ourthe upstream passing Namur into France's Lorraine area near Metz.
