The first houses were built in the late 19th century, and the municipality was formed in 1921. In common with all of Brussels' municipalities, it is legally bilingual (French–Dutch). The French name "Woluwe-Saint-Lambert" refers to Saint Lambert of Maastricht, a 7th-century saint who was venerated widely across medieval Europe.
