The first traces of human activity on the right bank of the Senne date from approximately 250,000 years ago. The remnants of an ancient camp were found in Flagey (Ixelles) and a stone tool used by primitive man in the area has been unearthed near Avenue Louise. Ixelles is believed to have been inhabited since neolithic times, although evidence remains that Gallo-Roman settlements were established there around three centuries before Christ's birth. In 1046, Count Baldwin IV acquired some land with a modest castle and its surrounding lands; this territory would eventually become Brussels' city centre and today still bears his name: "Boulevard (French)/Broekstraat" or "Brabantstraat".
