Violet Town is the administrative centre of the Shire of Strathbogie. The town was named after Violet Creek, which runs through it and was in turn named by surveyor Robert Hoddle for his wife's name. The Post Office opened on 1 January 1853 as Violet Town and closed in 1993; it reopened later that year under its current name.
