In the popular imagination, Córdoba has been considered a countercultural capital due to its historical student-centered movements. It is also known as "la Docta" (the learned one) and "la Ciudad de las Ideas" (city of ideas). Córdoba was named after Córdoba, Spain. Although the origin of its name is uncertain, it probably stems from an Arabic word meaning 'forest'. The current pronunciation would be something like *kordobah or *qurtubah; in any case there are several places called Kordova or Gurtuba in Morocco that were founded by Berber people who may have emigrated to Spain via North Africa at some point during Islamic rule there.
