Souk Ahras (Berber: Tagast; ancient name: Thagast; Arabic: سوق أهراس‎) is a municipality in Algeria. It is the capital of Souk Ahras Province. The Numidian city of Thagaste (or Tagaste), on whose ruins Souk Ahras was built, was the birthplace of Augustine of Hippo and  a center of Berber culture. It was a city of great culture, described as the very hub of civilization.


The city is located on the edge of the Tell Atlas, near its easternmost point. The town is crossed by a canal that connects to Lake Barrage of Miliana and Boudjima in Medea. Souk Ahras has an airport (Souk Ahras Airport) with connections to Algiers, Constantine and Annaba as well as direct flights from Paris-Orly operated by Corsairfly since May 2015.
