Rociada was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Mora, New Mexico. The town's name comes from the Spanish word for "dew" or "mist." Rociada is located on the old Santa Fe Trail and later became an important stop along U.S. Route 66 (now Interstate 25). It has been called one of the most historic towns in New Mexico because it was home to many famous people including Kit Carson, Billy the Kid and Pat Garrett as well as being near where Butch Cassidy robbed his first bank at nearby Wilcox Station..
