The city is represented in the Alberta Legislature by MLA Marie Renaud of the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta. The mayor, for a two-year term beginning 2014, is Nolan Crouse. In the 2011 Census, Statistics Canada originally reported that St. Albert had a population of 19,839 living in 7,088 of its 8,350 total dwellings; an 11% change from its 2006 population of 17 628 residents and 5 955 total dwellings. By 2016 however it became clear that this was due to an error with new housing developments being included into St. Albert's 2011 count instead being counted as part Edmonton's 2015 census results causing St Alberts population to be underreported by nearly 3 000 people over those five years leading up to 2016 when corrected numbers were released showing their actual 2013 municipal census populations at 20 051 (9 431 private dwellings) versus their previously published figure for 2012 which was 18 468 (8 915 private dwelling).
